AHU Replacement Electrical Works
Air handling units (AHUs) play a vital role in maintaining ventilation and environmental control within commercial and healthcare buildings. Replacing an existing unit requires careful planning to ensure both the electrical installation and associated control systems continue to operate reliably.
Project Overview
IGS Electrical was appointed to carry out the electrical works associated with replacing an air handling unit serving a hospital radiation department in Birmingham.
The project involved safely isolating and disconnecting the existing AHU before adapting the electrical installation to suit the replacement equipment. Prior to the changeover, we identified and recorded the existing cable routes, power supply and control wiring to ensure the new installation integrated seamlessly with the existing system.
Scope of Works
- Safely isolated and disconnected the existing air handling unit.
- Made redundant electrical supplies and control wiring safe.
- Recorded the existing cable routes and installation details.
- Identified the existing enable and fault signalling circuits.
- Reconfigured the electrical supply for the replacement AHU.
- Installed a new local rotary isolator adjacent to the unit.
- Modified the main control panel wiring.
- Reconnected the enable and fault circuits.
- Tested and commissioned the completed installation.
Control System Integration
As well as replacing the power supply, the existing control philosophy needed to be maintained. The enable and fault signalling circuits were carefully identified and transferred between the replacement AHU and the main control panel, ensuring the new equipment integrated correctly with the existing building controls without unnecessary modifications.
Completed Installation
The replacement AHU was successfully commissioned with full electrical functionality and seamless integration into the existing control system. Careful planning, accurate identification of the existing installation and comprehensive testing ensured the works were completed safely and with minimal disruption to the operational hospital environment.
