Domestic EV Charger Installation
We were asked to install an existing EV charger that the customer had removed from a previous property and wished to reuse at their new home. As the charger remained fully compliant with current standards, reusing the equipment provided a cost-effective solution without compromising safety or performance.
The property was located in Cannock, where we carried out the complete design, installation, testing and certification of the new EV charging circuit.
A dedicated EV consumer unit was installed neatly within the existing meter cupboard. Although space was extremely limited, careful planning allowed the installation to be completed with a tidy finish while maintaining safe working clearances.
The new EV consumer unit was supplied via a dedicated 40 A protective device before feeding the charger using steel wire armoured (SWA) cable. We prefer not to install a continuous 32 A load on a 32 A protective device where a better engineering solution is available, so the circuit was designed accordingly.
Before installation, we completed all electrical design calculations to verify the suitability of the existing electrical supply. As the property relied primarily on gas for space heating and hot water, the available supply capacity was sufficient and dynamic load management was not required.
Following installation, the charger was fully tested and inspected in accordance with BS 7671. We also completed the required Building Regulations notification to the Local Authority, ensuring the installation was fully compliant.
