Commercial Kitchen Extract Fan Energy Upgrade
A Birmingham hotel contacted us after an energy audit highlighted that the commercial kitchen extract fan had been running continuously for years, operating 24 hours a day regardless of whether the kitchen was in use. The client wanted a practical solution that would reduce energy consumption while allowing the kitchen staff to control the extract system locally.
One of the key requirements was to avoid modifying the hotel’s existing ventilation control panel. The original controls were ageing but still operational, so rather than risk unnecessary disruption, we designed a standalone solution that integrated with the existing installation.
Our engineers removed the supply to the extract fan from the existing control panel and re-fed the fan through a new variable speed inverter. A dedicated control cable was then installed between the inverter and a bespoke remote control station located within the kitchen.
The custom control panel was designed and labelled specifically for the client, providing simple operation with clear visual indication of fan status, including run and fault indication. Kitchen staff can now start, stop and control the extract fan directly from the kitchen without needing access to the main plant room.
By installing the inverter, the extract fan can also operate at reduced speeds where appropriate, significantly reducing energy consumption, lowering operating costs and extending the service life of the fan and motor.
This project demonstrates how existing commercial ventilation systems can often be modernised without replacing major plant equipment, providing cost-effective improvements in efficiency while maintaining reliability.
